Nice to see you!

Three major events occurred for me last year (2010), all in the space of about 2 weeks. I turned 50. The following day I got married. Two weeks later, my oldest daughter became pregnant with her first child and my first grandchild.

Most middle-aged people will tell you that in their minds, they still feel 20 something. It's the same for me.

Wasn't it only yesterday that I was planning a night out with guys from the surf club? That gorgeous new perm. Flaired, cuffed denims and the red t-shirt with the off-the-shoulder frill. Corked platform wedgies. **sigh**

Suddenly I'm looking in the mirror and wondering how 30 years can flash by so damned quickly!

So here I am in cyberspace, sharing my genuine shock and horror with anyone who'll listen and maybe I'll even meet some other over 50s who find themselves in the same predicament!

Welcome to my dilemna!!

Nonconforming

The rules were:

  • Be at the hall from 7.30am to set up
  • No food or drink in the hall
  • No packing up until 3pm
That’s seven hours without food or drink (except water) unless you use the coffee van outside, which sold the worst coffee I’ve tasted in a long time - very weak and very watery - and you had to stay outside to drink it.

The only food provided was a sausage in bread or bacon and egg roll. Absolutely no catering to any dietary requirements and again, you had to eat it outside.

As a true nonconformist, I baked a banana bread last night to take with us. I filled two containers with fresh fruit - one with watermelon and one with every berry known to mankind. I also took 2 fresh apples.

I took two big bottles of filtered water, which was allowed.

As for the coffee, BGWLBH bought the first latte for me and it tasted like dirty water so I returned it, offering to purchase another, but the gentleman insisted that they provide a fresh cup free of charge. The lady who made them offered a double shot so I gratefully accepted.

It tasted like dirtier water.

After a couple of hours, I texted Adoring Husband and asked him to deliver one of his fresh home made lattes.

It was perfect.

We kept AH on his toes this morning.

After the initial trip to bring our screen, mini table, easels and bench seat, we texted him four times to:

  • bring BGWLBH’s reading glasses
  • bring BGWLBH’s phone
  • bring my iPad
  • bring me a coffee
He was very accommodating.

Socially, it was a very successful day. I got to chat with lots of my old customers and many locals who I hadn’t seen for a couple of years.

Luckily BGWLBH made affordable, practical greeting cards to sell because they were our only sales for the day.

Our prices ranged from $2.50 to $10 to $25 to $40 and as high as $220 and there were lots of admirers and tyre kickers but no sales other than the cards.

The majority of stall holders complained of poor sales but others, like the plant stall, bragged of excellent sales and they even had to go home to bring more plants!

The woodworking man also had a good day, as did the lady with home made children’s clothes.

There were 3 other stalls selling art. One of them sold 2 pieces and another one sold 3 or 4. The third, like us, sold none.

The other stalls were selling:

  • Plants
  • Crocheted rugs and baby clothes
  • Organite pyramids
  • Painted rocks
  • Jewellery
  • Plants
  • Cakes
  • Signs
  • Glass work
  • Hand made bags
  • Towels, pot holders and wine glass covers
  • Cards
  • Resin trays
  • Woodwork
  • Woven pots
  • Framed pebble pictures
More that I can’t remember.

By 1pm, the hall had emptied of browsers and customers, so the stall holders began wandering around to look at all the goodies on display.

At 2pm some stall holders packed up and were chastised by the organisers for doing so.

At 2.30pm, BGWLBH and I began packing up. As she opened the back door, somebody said “I don’t think you’re allowed to leave yet.”

She replied “What are they going to do? Sack me?”

With that, everybody laughed and began packing up as well!

Unless the organisers make some changes to the rules and the opening hours, I doubt that we will return next year.

We were home, unpacked, hungry and exhausted at 3.30pm.

After we ate something substantial, we all retreated to our relaxing spots for the afternoon. Mine was in front of the TV for the football.

I played with Harley until he almost collapsed from exhaustion! Crazy dog.

I cooked an easy dinner of chicken and salad.

It’s now almost 10.30pm but feels like midnight! I still have caffeine buzzing through my veins - it usually takes 12 hours to wear off and it was midday when I drank my coffee so that sucks.

I will, however, attempt to sleep.

I wonder if the organisers of the art and craft expo will issue an evaluation survey to all of the stall holders to get feedback? I’m guessing not. They should.

Time to sleep now.

Nite all.

Ready Set Go

A lot going on today.

I cooked breakfast.

Took Harley for a training walk for an hour.

We practised setting up our display for the art expo tomorrow …

BGWLBH and Adoring Husband packed the majority of the art and displays into both cars. Some of it didn’t fit in BGWLBH’s car.

I started to price my art but decided to wait until we are in the hall so the price cards don’t get crushed or smudged in transit.

Searched for and located the square reader for payments.

Made a list of what I need to remember in the morning.

Found the money tin and key so that BGWLBH could provide and count the float.

Made the marinade for tonight’s chicken dinner.

Chopped and cooked the vegetables to go in Harley’s meals then bagged the meals for freezing.

Baked banana bread to take tomorrow. We are not supposed to take food because it’s provided, but they never provide gluten free food, so we will be covered at least for morning and afternoon tea. We’ll have 7 hours in the hall - exhausting!

Played with Harley in the afternoon.

Played TV trivia for an hour.

Watched the footy.

Now, it’s almost 11pm so I’d best sleep if I want to be alert tomorrow!

Still Training

Ok so we didn’t do the practise run for setting up our stall today.

Instead, we drove into the Bay to pick up some last minute stuff like bubble wrap to protect purchases, sticky tape, carry bags, pegs for hanging artwork on string etc.

We also did some grocery shopping, did a Su Jus run, bought an extra Powerball ticket for the BIG one, picked up our meat order from the butcher, checked the mail, bought some flowers among other things.

I took Harley for a long walk this morning (90 mins)  putting into practise the new training that I’ve learned online.

Still a work in progress but I feel real improvement in his attitude. The car chasing is still a bit unpredictable but I reckon we’re doing ok.

The women played their State of Origin game tonight. NSW won but QLD won the series.

I’m struggling to stay awake right now so I’m signing off.

Winning Again … Again!

State of Origin

Game two of a three game series.

QLD winning 32 - 6

QLD won the first game 26 - 18

Champions.

Today was more “Stranger Things” bingeing.

Three more sleeps til the art expo.

BGWLBH is very well organised.

Me … not so much.

But how is that any different to any other day?

Tomorrow, we will have a practice run of setting up our table and displays. We don’t have a lot of space for such large pieces of art so it’ll be interesting to see how we manage it.

I’ll take pics.

It’s almost 11.30pm so it’s sleep time for me.

I Forgot

Harley got a new outdoor raised bed today.

I also bought some new treats and a ball.

The ball is a touch bigger than a tennis ball, it bounces quite high, moves very fast when it hits the ground and is made from hard plastic so it makes a hell of a noise when it hits the wall/fence/furniture.

He loves it.

While in The Bay, I ran into a few locals who I haven’t seen for a while. A couple who used to attend meditation at the shop, a couple who do the markets regularly and a couple who used to live around the corner.

It was weird seeing so many people that I know. It doesn’t usually happen.

Our shopping list today sent us to Dentist, Petbarn, Heaps Discount, Newsagent, Coles, Fruitnveg kiosk, Kmart, Bank, Spotlight, Su Jus cafe, Robin’s Kitchen and Coffee Club.

Because Harley missed out on our play time this morning, I changed into home clothes and took him straight out to the pool area to test out the new ball. We squeezed about 40 minutes of play in before I rested in front of the TV watching Cheers.

It was Taco Tuesday for us, which is a nice easy dinner.

I’m feeling pretty weary about now so I reckon I’ll be asleep before 10.30pm.

Form a Habit

I’ve decided that walking Harley needs to become a daily habit.

It’s too difficult to train good walking habits into him when we only walk two or three times a week.

There is still much to do because he is hot and cold on every walk.

Sometimes he is perfect, but he is never perfect for the entire walk. I can tell he is trying hard but being a juvenile, he struggles with self control.

If we walk every day and I’m consistent with my demands and directions, then I think we can improve quickly.

He is very strong and his need to chase vehicles could easily put me in danger, so I have joined a training group online, specifically for border collies that want to chase cars.

The first lesson begins very soon so I’ll be joining in as soon as I sign off here.

We walked for an hour this morning and followed that up with an hour chasing balls around the pool. We had another 30 minutes chasing balls this afternoon.

I watched more ‘Stranger Things’ today and cooked duck with orange sauce, sweet potato and potato in the air fryer, zucchini slice, coleslaw and slices of tomato and cucumber.

MasterChef and FBoy Island were on my TV agenda tonight.

Now I’m off to learn how to stop Harley from chasing cars.
