Nice to see you!

Three major events occurred for me last year (2010), all in the space of about 2 weeks. I turned 50. The following day I got married. Two weeks later, my oldest daughter became pregnant with her first child and my first grandchild.

Most middle-aged people will tell you that in their minds, they still feel 20 something. It's the same for me.

Wasn't it only yesterday that I was planning a night out with guys from the surf club? That gorgeous new perm. Flaired, cuffed denims and the red t-shirt with the off-the-shoulder frill. Corked platform wedgies. **sigh**

Suddenly I'm looking in the mirror and wondering how 30 years can flash by so damned quickly!

So here I am in cyberspace, sharing my genuine shock and horror with anyone who'll listen and maybe I'll even meet some other over 50s who find themselves in the same predicament!

Welcome to my dilemna!!

Good Business

So yesterday afternoon, I got a phone call from an acquaintance who lives next door to a friend of mine.

She was very unhappy with the shots taken by the photographer that her employer used, so she asked if I would take a photo that she could use on her business cards and stationery for her new job.

I said that I'd 'have a go'.  She said that she would be here after work at about 4.30pm.

The way she said it, made me think that she believed I had a studio here.

An hour before she arrived, I pegged a white sheet up over a wall on the Eastern side of our house, which at that time of the day, is in shade, and I took a couple of practise shots.

When she arrived, I led her through the house and outside to my makeshift 'set' and explained to her that portrait shots were not my forte, so I couldn't guarantee that the shots would be any good, but that I would do my best.

She did seem a little surprised to be standing in front of a pegged sheet in my back yard!

Surprisingly, it only took about a dozen shots to get one that we agreed on.

The tricky part was then finding my way around photoshop to make the crinkly white sheet in the background look like a solid colour behind her.

I suffered my way through for a while, becoming very frustrated.  I even found a site called Elements Ten for Dummies.

I'm obviously dumber than a dummy, because I couldn't understand it at all.

Finally, in desperation, I sent my friend 'The Nikonian' a private message in facebook and asked her to explain in simple photoshop terms how to perform this task.

One paragraph later (thank you! thank you!) and WHALAH!!

Not too bad for my first business card photo!  Even if I do say so myself!

She offered to pay me for the pleasure, but I told her it was my 'congratulations on your new job' gift from me.  When I emailed it to her later, she replied with a very pleased message, thanking me.  Thank goodness!

Very nerve racking these shoots.  All good experience, and each time I push myself a bit out of my comfort zone, that just improves my photography.

Tomorrow, Adoring Husband and I are helping a couple learn how to download photos from their camera to their computer and then how to create an email with a photo attached.  They also want to learn how to put information from their computer to a memory stick.

Then another photo shoot for me!  This time with musical instruments.  What I thought would be one musical instrument, has turned into almost an orchestra of instruments, so I am very excited at what I might find when I arrive!

So it's a big day ahead for me.  Best get some sleep!

Nite all.
