Nice to see you!

Three major events occurred for me last year (2010), all in the space of about 2 weeks. I turned 50. The following day I got married. Two weeks later, my oldest daughter became pregnant with her first child and my first grandchild.

Most middle-aged people will tell you that in their minds, they still feel 20 something. It's the same for me.

Wasn't it only yesterday that I was planning a night out with guys from the surf club? That gorgeous new perm. Flaired, cuffed denims and the red t-shirt with the off-the-shoulder frill. Corked platform wedgies. **sigh**

Suddenly I'm looking in the mirror and wondering how 30 years can flash by so damned quickly!

So here I am in cyberspace, sharing my genuine shock and horror with anyone who'll listen and maybe I'll even meet some other over 50s who find themselves in the same predicament!

Welcome to my dilemna!!

A Slow Day

Three of three tips correct so far this week!

A very uneventful day.

Harley play.

“Fend for yourself” food day, so heated some of my frozen home made cauliflower and potato soup and added cooked fresh salmon and chopped spring onions to the mix. Very nice for brunch.

Tonight I had mini dim sims.

I watched an odd movie called “May December” with Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman on Netflix.

I napped on the couch for a little while.

I watched the football this afternoon and evening.

Right now, it’s Wimbledon time, but most play has been suspended due to rain.

There are two Aussies playing tonight as well as Djokovic, but who knows when they’ll actually get on the court.

I’m taking good care of me this year so I shall get some sleep early and if I wake during the night, I’ll check the games by turning on the TV, then watch them if I’m feeling up to it.

For now, it’s …

Non Bed Day

One of the biggest marketing lies in history: Women "needed" to shave.

Before 1915, American women never shaved their underarms.

It wasn't even a thought.

Then Gillette launched a new product and convinced half the population they had an "embarrassing personal problem."

Here's how they manufactured a billion dollar habit that lasted 100+ years.

In 1914, Gillette owned the men's shaving market but had maxed out their growth.

They needed to double their addressable market.

Women represented 50% of the population but 0% of their customers.

The opportunity was hiding in plain sight: sleeveless evening gowns were trending for the first time ever.

June 1915: Gillette launched the Milady Dรฉcolletรฉ.

But here's the genius part.

They didn't just sell a razor.

They sold a manufactured crisis.

Ads in Harper's Bazaar called underarm hair "objectionable," "unsightly," and "embarrassing."

They literally created shame around something that was 100% normal just months before.

The psychology was brutal but brilliant:

Step 1: Target elite women first through high fashion magazines

Step 2: Frame hairlessness as essential for the "modern" woman

Step 3: Create social anxiety around being judged by friends

"Fashion Says—Evening gowns must be sleeveless...The Woman of Fashion Says—The underarms must be as smooth as the face."

They priced the razor at $5 in 1917 (about $120 today) in luxurious "French Ivory and Gold" cases.

This wasn't just a product. It was a status symbol.

The results were insane:

๐Ÿ“ˆ 1914: 390,000 total razor sales

๐Ÿ“ˆ 1916: 782,028 total razor sales

๐Ÿ“ˆ 1917: Over 1,000,000 total razor sales

๐Ÿ“ˆ 1925: 15,000,000 razors sold annually

They doubled their market by creating a "need" that never existed.

But here's what's really crazy:

By 1964, 98% of American women were shaving their legs.

Today, 99% of American women have tried hair removal.

Gillette didn't just sell products.

They rewrote cultural norms for an entire century.

Today, I planned on a self indulgent bed day.

I got out of bed at 9am for Harley play and then I crumbed my prawn cutlets and cooked them for brunch. I sat in the lounge room to eat them and got involved in two Netflix movies with Adoring Husband.

Before I knew it, it was after 2pm!

I might plan for Sunday bed day.

This evening was a great footy match between Bulldogs and Broncos. At half time, Broncos were losing 18 - 0 and at full time the score was 18 - 22 with a massive come back win by my beloved Broncos!!

On the other hand, in the AFL, my team Carlton were predictably annihilated by AH’s team Collingwood.

Now I’m watching tennis in my bedroom and it’s time to put on my jammies and climb under the covers.

I’m not sure if BGWLBH and I are going to Howard markets tomorrow or not. I guess it depends on how cold it is and whether we feel brave enough to expose ourselves to the Winter weather.

I’d best get some sleep, just in case.

Need a Bed Day

Had another big day in The Bay, searching for birthday gifts for Bubbles.

The older she gets, the more difficult it is to buy for her. Also, we see each other so rarely, we have no idea what each other likes any more!

Anyway, I found something which I hope she will like/love, but I’d like to add a couple of small gifts to the parcel.

I’m feeling quite weary and had big plans for watching De Minaur’s Wimbledon match, followed by Djokovic, but I don’t think I have the stamina to do it!

I made curried lamb pastries for dinner tonight and BGWLBH prepared a salad to go with it.

We played trivia and again, we were all in bed by 7.30pm! Bunch of old fogies we are haha.

Now I’m going to attempt some tennis watching OR fall asleep to the sound of tennis racket on ball ๐ŸฅŽ

Let’s Go Shopping!

It was very cold this morning, which made it difficult to get out of bed.

I had turned off the tennis at a reasonable hour and set my alarm for 6am, but surprisingly, I woke at 5.30am!

The only match that I actually watched, was Di Minaur’s and he won easily.

So far, in round one, 23 seeded players have been knocked out of the competition. It’s the worst result in over 150 years of Wimbledon history! This might create a great opportunity for a lower seeded player (or even an UNseeded player) to steal victory! You never know!

It’s currently raining in London so the covers are on the courts and there is no play. I don’t know whether to set my alarm for midnight and try to catch some sleep while I can, OR save myself for tomorrow night when Djokovic is likely to play.

Decisions Decisions ๐Ÿซค

Before I even left home, Harley’s exuberant tail wagging knocked a mason jar off a shelf and it shattered all over the floor. This set our departure back ten minutes while we cleaned up the mess. Adoring Husband finished the clean up with the vacuum cleaner.

I had a very pleasant day in The Bay browsing lots of shops.

Office Works was delightful, as always, and I found myself a cute Snoopy journal …

I visited the local craft store and bought a couple of gifts. A dress for Hazie and a hand made cot cover with puppy dog material for baby Dearden, who is due in November (my niece’s baby).

I got myself a couple of “over shoulder boulder holders” and some new lipstick.

Lotto tickets, seafood, bread, fruit n veg, groceries, meat, Harley food and other bits and pieces. A giant green juice from Su Jus topped off a pretty good day.

Harley was happy to see me return home and we cuddled on the couch for 20 minutes while AH unpacked the shopping.

We had play time and I made tacos for dinner. I had a fresh king prawn, avocado and red onion sandwich.

We all played trivia and were all in bed (not together) by 7.30pm.

AH has been obsessing over golf tournaments, so he watches that in his room. I, of course, am obsessing over Wimbledon in my room.

I’m actually feeling quite weary so it might be time for sleep.

Tennis Junkie

Knowing that I needed to be up early for meditation, I decided to not get too involved in Day One of Wimbledon and I was asleep very soon after 11pm.

My bladder woke me at 1.09am and I decided to turn on the TV for a quick score check. Alcaraz was being given a run for his money by 38 yr old Fognini, so I decided to watch for a while - and “for a while” means 2.5 hours! It was a great match but I was disappointed that Fognini couldn’t take it out in the fifth.

I was sound asleep almost immediately on completion of that match and my alarm woke me at 6.30am.

Ugh ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

What a relief it was to find a text message from The Gypsy announcing that she was cancelling meditation! Unfortunately, it was due to illness, but it gave me another 2 hours of much needed sleep for which I was very grateful.

I took it pretty easy for the day and played some ‘Sequence’ with BGWLBH and some trivia from a big book, watched some telly, cooked crispy skinned chicken with salad for dinner, played more trivia and I’m now in bed watching De Minaur vs Baena at Wimbledon. The Aussie has won the first two sets.

I need to be up early to go to The Bay with BGWLBH, so Wimbledon will again NOT be a priority. I’m keen to see how Djokovic plays - probably around 4am.

It’s going to be a cold morning 5°C and only reaching 19°C during the day. I will struggle to climb out of my warm bed!

Mid Year

I forgot to mention that on 28th June, my Mum, had she lived, would have turned 85. She’s been gone for 20 years now.

Crazy how time seems to fly by.

On Sunday night, I paid for a Gaia subscription. EOFY sale, down from over $1000 to $133 for 14 months. Gaia is a video and streaming service that focuses on mental and physical health, meditation techniques, different views on spirituality, Ayurveda,  yoga, diet, health and well-being and so much more.

Today, on Gaia, I watched a very interesting movie on the energy of water. Wow!

There’s lots of stuff from my fave, Joe Dispenza and I’ve started watching his series “Rewired” which explains the concept of rewiring your brain to stop past traumas from controlling your life and helping you create the life that you want. He is such an interesting and intelligent man.

It was a very wet and gloomy day. Perfect for staying inside and doing what I normally do on a bright and sunshiny day haha.

I made some apple and cinnamon muffins.

For dinner I made sausage rolls with turkey mince. I added finely chopped spinach, red onion, red capsicum, garlic, salt, pepper, toasted pine nuts, fresh chopped chillies, egg and a sprinkle of gf bread crumbs.

We played trivia until it was time for the 1% Club where I played beautifully until the final 1% question. I can usually get to the final question pretty easily but I’ve only been able to correctly answer the final question three times out of about 25 shows.

I am now watching Day 1 of Wimbledon and I need to get up early for meditation. Tomorrow will be a struggle for me, but of course, it’s all self inflicted.

Meh Meh and Meh

My sister, Squirt, got a perfect round in the footy tipping this week!

I was one game short of perfect.

Bugger.

I spent most of my day in YouTube while Adoring Husband spent most of his mowing our property and whipper snipping.

The footy took our attention for the remainder of the day.

I cooked muffin sized zucchini slice for dinner and served it with sweet potato and white potato wedges and a garden salad.

That was followed by trivia.

Now I’m watching Deadpool 2 and I don’t know why. I think I shall find something less blood thirsty and violent to fall asleep to.
