Nice to see you!

Three major events occurred for me last year (2010), all in the space of about 2 weeks. I turned 50. The following day I got married. Two weeks later, my oldest daughter became pregnant with her first child and my first grandchild.

Most middle-aged people will tell you that in their minds, they still feel 20 something. It's the same for me.

Wasn't it only yesterday that I was planning a night out with guys from the surf club? That gorgeous new perm. Flaired, cuffed denims and the red t-shirt with the off-the-shoulder frill. Corked platform wedgies. **sigh**

Suddenly I'm looking in the mirror and wondering how 30 years can flash by so damned quickly!

So here I am in cyberspace, sharing my genuine shock and horror with anyone who'll listen and maybe I'll even meet some other over 50s who find themselves in the same predicament!

Welcome to my dilemna!!

Killin’ It

Very happy with my footy tipping prowess this week and I am now ten points in front of my closest rival …

Wahoo!!!

So today, I started on my new eating regime.

I believe that I have Grave’s Disease - I was diagnosed with it early in 2008 and after refusing surgery and radioactive iodine, I agreed to take medication.

I had left it too long to see a doctor, so by the time I was diagnosed, my health had seriously deteriorated to a dangerous level.

I took the medication for 8 months.

A month after we arrived in QLD, I found a new doctor who was shocked at the medication that I’d been prescribed, but he prescribed it again without question.

That’s when I decided to wean myself off it.

My symptoms did not return and I have been healthy.

In 2018 I started experiencing some symptoms again but they would come and go. I’d feel poorly for a week and then come good for three months, so I was never feeling bad for long enough to consider a doctor’s visit.

Recently, the gaps between feeling poorly have shortened and I know that I need to get serious.

That does NOT mean that I’m  making a doctor’s visit my first option.

My new eating regime goes like this:

  • No gluten
  • No dairy (except ghee)
  • No refined sugar
  • No grains
  • No legumes
  • No nightshades (potato, tomato, eggplant, capsicum or chilli)
  • No tea/coffee/caffeine.
I DO have to eat:

  • All other vegetables, especially cauliflower and broccoli, preferably organic.
  • Fresh organic fruit, especially berries.
  • Chicken, turkey, duck, fish (not shellfish because it’s high in iodine), lamb.
  • Nuts and seeds.
  • Warm lemon water on an empty stomach first thing in the morning.
  • 1 teaspoon of organic cold pressed coconut oil every day.
  • Coconut yoghurt.
  • Probiotics
  • Kefir
  • Kimchi
  • Selenium (2 brazil nuts every day)
  • Vitamin D3
  • Magnesium
Even if I don’t have GD, I know that this way of eating will cure a myriad of other medical conditions and diseases.

If there is no improvement after 3 months, I’ll try a Naturopath and if no success from there, I’ll go see a Doctor. I know that there is a very good thyroid specialist on Sunny Coast.

Anyway, that’s my story.

Today, I started my day with warm lemon water. Because I’d purchased them yesterday, I ate prawns for breakfast and then crumbed some prawn cutlets for mid afternoon dinner - no more shellfish from here in. I had two mandarines for dinner.

I’ve been craving sugar (a sure symptom of GD for me) so I have a box of Frosty Fruits in the freezer. I’ll need to wean off them to avoid those nasty sugar withdrawal symptoms!

I feel motivated.

The tricky part is that BGWLBH also has a thyroid condition which is the opposite of mine, so she has a completely different list of foods that she requires. She can’t have cauliflower or broccoli, she needs MORE iodine enriched foods, no soy or pork, no nuts etc. My job as the cook will be a bit trickier.

So that’s the focus for me right now.

Nite all.
